Transition Meeting

LKS2 Transition June 2018

This term we are learning about "The Romans." Our English work will be focused on the book "Escape from Pompeii" which is set during the period of the vocanoes eruption. The children will be writing diaries as though they are character's from the book as well as writing both character and setting descriptions. In History, we will be learning about life in Ancient Rome and about the legacy that the Romans left in Britain.

Home Learning

In LKS2, we set home learning tasks to support the children in consolidating the learning we are doing at school during the term. A Home Learning book is provided to each child to complete Home Learning tasks in, and further details of work set can be found in it.

This terms Home learning can be found here

Home Learning in LKS2 consists of:

  • termly project linked to the topic: the children are given a choice of projects and expected to complete 1.  Ideas for how to complete the tasks are provided but children are encouraged to use their imagination and decide on how to present work themselves. Home learning is shared with the class and all children have the opportunity to give and receive feedback. Teachers provide written feedback and a number of housepoints dependant on effort and content. This term’s project tasks can be found here.
  •  Maths tasks, set and completed online through the ‘MyMaths’ website. This is set electronically at the start of the term and checked online by your teacher throughout the term.
  • Children are expected to read 5 times a week at home. Confident readers may choose to read to themselves and can record their own comments in their reading record. We ask that parents support this by signing their child’s reading record at least once per week.
  • Each class has sent home the spellings for this term. It is expected that children will be able to spell all the words by the end of term. Strategies will be taught in school in discreet spelling lessons. Please support your child by practising these at home. Spellings will be tested every Friday.
  • Times tables: There is a new times table test which will take place in June for children in Year 4. It is expected that children know their times tables up to 12 x 12 by this time. In LKS2 we practise at least 3 times a week using RockStar Maths sheets which test children's fluency of the multiplications and their related divisions. In Year 4, they also use RockStar Maths on line to develop the children's fluency using ICT. Times tables are also practised during daily counting and when using a variety of methods in Maths lessons. The link below to Topmarks website is a fun way for your child to practise against the clock.

Home learning should be presented to a high standard. Handwriting should be neat and joined and all punctuation should be correct. Please do support your child with their home learning however we do want to see that the work has primarily been completed by the child.

There are a range of websites out there to provide additional support and learning opportunities for your child’s learning, some of which can be found below:

Routines and Resources

A typical daily timetable for a class in LKS2 can be found here.   The order of lessons may differ in each class but this will show you what you can expect your child to be learning each week.

A termly Key Stage newsletter is emailed out to inform you of the learning for the term as well as any upcoming events which are specific to LKS2.

Children are not required to provide any equipment however they may bring in a pencil case if they wish.

PE kits for both indoor and outdoor lessons need to be available in school all week as although PE is usually on set days, circumstances may arise when the day needs to change or a child needs a change of clothes.

Outdoor Learning takes place on alternate terms in LKS2. Year 3 are having Outdoor Learning in Spring 1 until February half term then Year 4 will have Outdoor learning in Spring  2 until the Easter holiday. Children are required to wear warm clothes and footwear that are suitable for muddy activities. Outdoor Learning takes place in all weathers and all children take part so it is vital that they are dressed appropriately.
