Spring Term 1 2022 Information

In English, Year 2 are reading the book “Into the Forest” by Anthony Browne, a fabulous story, where each illustration cleverly signposts references to popular fairy tales. We will be comparing this version with the traditional version of Little Red Riding Hood, identifying the emotions of the characters, showing our understanding of events and planning and writing our own versions.

Year 1 are reading 'Six Dinner Sid' by Inga Moore, a story about a sleek black cat called Sid who manages to reside at six homes at the same time, receiving all the benefits, including six daily meals. The children will be learning about the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts, culminating with writing a fact file about cats.

In maths, Year 2 have started a unit on multiplication and division, learning about equal and unequal groups, linking it to repeated addition, before  moving onto using the multiplication symbol. They will then move on to learning about statistics in a few weeks. Year 1 are adding and subtracting within 20 this term, before moving onto place value within 50.

In our curriculum lessons, we are comparing geographical similarities and differences between  the United Kingdom and another country outside of Europe (China in Year 2, and South Africa in Year 1); in PSHE we will be using our school value of “ambition” when thinking about our goals for now and the future and in RE we are learning about 'Jesus as a friend' in Year 1 (Christianity), and 'Prayer at home' (Islam) in Year 2.

Our science unit is “Animals including humans” and we will be learning about changing offspring, exercise, and healthy eating.

Key Stage One Home Learning:

'MyMaths' home learning activities are set every two weeks in Year 1 and Year 2 on Thursdays. You can find the link to the page here:

'MyMaths' logins have been sent home with your child. If it has been misplaced, please let the school know and we can send a duplicate home.

The children also have logins to 'Numbots',  an app which is all about children achieving the “triple win” of understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction. Again, if your child's login has been misplaced, please let school know so we can send a duplicate home.

You can find the link to the page here:

Home learning for KS1 and termly spellings for Year 1 and Year 2 will be sent home on Friday 7th January. Please check your child's book bags for them.

Termly spellings

In Year 2 a selection of the words from the spelling list will be tested each Friday.  The first spelling test will be on Friday 14th January. The following Friday, they will be tested on the exact same spellings then the week after they will have some of the same spellings mixed in with new ones. We will then continue to test the same words for 2 weeks at a time before including new ones.

In Year 1 there is a very informal quiz on the words from the spelling list at the beginning of the phonics session on a Friday morning. The children will have 5 words to learn each week and these will be dated on the spelling list that the children will bring home. There are also additional challenge words, words that the children are expected to be able to spell at the end of Year 1.

Home Learning

Your child will need to choose one of the activities to compete. Please do encourage them to put their best effort in to their home learning and to hand it in on time. Work and pictures should be handed in with their home learning books. If you are not able to print pictures or you would like to send a power point then please email them to either:
