Spurcroft Primary School and Nursery

The future begins here...

Maths

Our intent for Maths

At Spurcroft Primary School, we follow a ‘Mastery Approach’ to our maths teaching. Our aim is to provide children with a deep knowledge of mathematical concepts and ultimately create life-long mathematicians with a secure understanding of maths. We set our maths lessons in real-life contexts to help children make links between their maths learning and the real world around them. We strongly believe that all children can ‘do’ maths!

We strive to achieve the following within our daily maths teaching:

  • Pupils using mathematical vocabulary accurately
  • Pupils representing concepts in different ways using concrete apparatus, pictorial representations and formal methods
  • Pupils being given opportunities to reason effectively every lesson
  • Pupils to mark their own work within the lesson and move themselves on to greater challenges independently when they feel ready
  • Opportunities for pupils to deepen their understanding through open-ended problems

Useful Websites

The links below will take you to some useful websites for maths games online. Children in KS2 are all given a login for ‘Times Table Rockstars’ and can login using the link below. The games all provide children with opportunities to practise and consolidate their fluency of number and recall of number facts such as number bonds and times tables.

Maths at home really matters

Helping at Home

Below are the presentations used at recent parent events. These give information about how Maths is taught across the school and how you can support your child at home.
